Dr Dominic McHugh is a scholar of musical theatre and film, especially the golden age of the Broadway musical. He completed a PhD in Musicology at King's College London and is currently Reader in Musicology at the University of Sheffield, UK.
Dominic is the author or editor of six books, including Loverly: The Life and Times of My Fair Lady (2012), Adapting The Wizard of Oz (2018) and The Complete Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner (2018). Please see the Publications page for more information on his past and current book projects.
Dominic has extensive experience of acting as an advisor to theatre and television projects, including the 2016 Sydney Opera House production of My Fair Lady directed by Dame Julie Andrews. His source-based approach to research, which encompasses archives and libraries all over the world, has made him uniquely qualified to support musical theatre projects that aim to breathe new life into classic musicals by returning to the original creators' processes.
Dominic has appeared on BBC radio and television over thirty times, including BBC Breakfast News, Michael Grade's Stars of the Musical Theatre on BBC2, the Today programme on Radio 4 and Radio 3's In Tune. He has also appeared on international radio stations including NPR and Sirius XM in America.
Talks and lectures
Dominic has given talks and lectures and led insight events in some of the world's most important venues, including the Library of Congress, the Sydney Opera House, the National Theatre, Sadler's Wells, the New York Public Library, Oxford University, City Center, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Lincoln Center.
